Its official. Or it will be, as soon as legislation passed by the Texas Senate last night is signed by Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott and takes effect on September 1. That’s when Texas law will officially acknowledge this ancient reality:
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
Humanity has known this obvious truth since the early days of creation. There have certainly been attempts to obscure it throughout history, but it is only in the last 15 years or so that the corrupted American culture has succeeded in doing so to the point where we have to pass laws that state the obvious.
House Bill 229 provides these simple definitions that must be adhered to wherever they are found in Texas statute:
"Female" and "woman" mean an individual whose biological reproductive system is developed to produce ova.
"Male" and "man" mean an individual whose biological reproductive system is developed to fertilize the ova of a female.
"Girl" means a child of the female sex.
"Boy" means a child of the male sex.
How did we ever get to a place where we have to argue about whether someone is a boy or a girl? A man or a woman? Because our culture is in rebellion against God.
The first thing we learn about God in the Bible is that He is our Creator: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This is where the lie of evolution came from; a rebellious culture trying to hide this fundamental aspect of God’s nature in an attempt to deny God’s existence. Of course, it is destined to fail, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork (Psalm 19:1). Yet it succeeds in hiding the truth from many.
The same thing is happening with the lies of feminism, homosexuality, and transgenderism. God created us male and female with males and females having different attributes and different roles in God’s creation. Humanity with these differences also testifies to the glory of God our Creator. And much like evolution, feminism, homosexuality, and transgenderism are designed to deny that God is our Creator, and thus that He exists at all.
We’ve seen the consequences as these lies have taken root in our culture since the 1960s. Sexual diseases have spread rapidly, with AIDS killing perhaps 750,000 Americans. Approximately 63 million babies have been murdered through abortion. The structure of the family has crumbled: two parent families have declined overall by 25%, only 33% of black children live in two parent families, and as few as 25% of families have a stay-at-home mother. At best, students in public schools are told that God does not matter. Of late it has become perfectly acceptable in certain circles to slice off the breasts of young girls and the penises of young boys to affirm their gender “choices,” which are more often than not forced on them. And when some parents try to push back against this madness, they are ignored, arrested, or even have their children taken from them.
As tragic as these are, however, even worse are the eternal consequences for the millions whose eyes have been blinded so that “there is no fear of God before their eyes” (Romans 3:18). They have “bec[o]me futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts [have been] darkened” (Romans 1:21). And “they [have] exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25). Without repentance brought by the Word and Holy Spirit, this tragedy is self-perpetuating, as the eternal and societal consequences are passed down to subsequent generations (Exodus 20:5).
This helps us see that the steps the Texas Legislature is taking may have consequences far beyond making sure our public records are accurate. President Trump has weighed in to help expose this lie as well, with an executive order that recognizes that there are only “two sexes, male and female.” It is too bad the Texas House of Representatives has not been quite as helpful.
The House did pass HB 229, but it killed Senate Bill 406, which was even stronger. Rather than just defining male and female, SB 406 required the biological sex of children to be put on their birth certificates and prohibited changing the certificates by registers or court order to list something other than the person’s biological sex. Doing this is important because changing birth certificates to match the person’s “sexual identity” or “chosen gender” is a key aspect of the transgender assault on society. Much like getting a “marriage” certificate is a key aspect of the gay agenda. It may be, though, that HB 229 takes care of this. We will see.
Of course, Democrats are leading this aspect of the rebellion against God. One of those is San Antonio Sen. José Menéndez. He said HB 229 was a “form of state-sponsored discrimination.” He perpetuated the lie about God when he claimed that “non-binary Texans … are real people.” All Texans are real people, but none of them are non-binary.
However, rather than discrimination, HB 229 provides hope to those caught up in the transgender delusion.
As the Texas Tribune reported,
Heather Clark, an Austin woman whose ‘wife’ is transgender, testified to a Senate committee earlier this month about the impact of her wife’s documents being reverted to a male gender marker.
“Anytime that she is required to show her driver's license, she could be compelled to explain why her appearance doesn't align with her documentation.”
If this man is “compelled” to explain why he looks like a woman often enough, perhaps the scales will fall off his eyes (Acts 9:18) and he’ll see the lie he has been living.
There is another ray of hope for Texas families and the sexually confused this session. SB 12 significantly expands parental rights when dealing with government schools. In particular, it prohibits schools from providing “instruction, guidance, activities, or programming regarding sexual orientation or gender identity to students.” This has been a significant problem because some students have been “transitioned” from one gender to another in government schools without the parents’ knowledge. This bill is still subject to negotiations between the Texas Senate and House.
Hope can also be found in HB 1106. It addresses the very real problem of children being taken from their families because the parents have been cited for abuse for refusing to affirm “a child's perception of the child's gender or a child's expressed sexual orientation” or to “use a child's preferred name or pronouns.” HB 1106 would affirm that these parental actions are not abuse.
The rebellion against God is at full throttle in today’s world. But as we see with these bills, Jesus Christ is at work using His people and the institutions of the nations He rules over (Psalm 2:10-11) to dash the rebellion “like a potter’s vessel” while He is making all things new. Including, by His grace, many of those who have become lost in sexual sin and confusion.
Very excellent thoughts sir.
