Taking on Leviathan—One Post at a Time
Support ExcellentThought’s Mission of Bringing a Biblical Understanding of Law, Economics, and Civil Government to Our Culture
I greatly appreciate everyone who reads ExcellentThought. I started it 23 years ago as a weekly email to bring a biblical perspective to issues of public policy and culture. There are of course others who do this, but I believe my background of more than thirty years of professional work in public policy and study of economics and theology brings a perspective to my work that helps shed light on how we might honor and obey our Lord Jesus Christ in our laws, policies, and culture.
Not surprisingly, a lot of politicians do not like such an approach; it is difficult for them to acknowledge that someone other than themselves is in charge. They particularly do not like being reminded that lower taxes and less spending, i.e., smaller government, is an integral part of the biblical approach. It seems that what most politicians like to do more than anything else is spend our money, giving it to people who haven’t earned it through the marketplace—or received it through charity. This would be called theft in any other venue.
I’ve written more than 700 emails and posts on my own dime since I started. It has been a labor of love. This will continue in order to further spread the good news about how we can “declar[e] the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27) to those concerned about the cultural issues of the day, particularly in the realm of public policy. I’ve worked in politics for long enough to know that education and logic will not ultimately win the day; we need to change hearts and minds to change the world, and only God’s Word can do that.
I have, however, just enabled paid subscriptions to ExcellentThought for the first time so that those who wish to may support my work. If you are willing to do so, I would greatly appreciate it. As a small incentive to help me devote more of my time to ExcellentThought, for an investment of just $8 dollars a month, or $80 a year, you’ll receive a monthly email that takes a look at current events across the United States. And if you support my work as a Covenant Supporter at $240 a year, I’ll also send you a free copy of either my book, Race in America: Liberalism’s Attack on Minorities and the Church, The Maker versus the Takers by Jerry Bowyer, or Slaying Leviathan by Glenn Sunshine. However, if you choose not to contribute in this way, that is fine; the emails will keep coming.
One more marketing thought. Moving from my old website to Substack has helped to significantly increase subscribers. But I’d like to increase them—free or paid—even more. So when you get an email from me or read one of my posts on the Substack app that you enjoy, please either forward it, share it, like it, make a comment, or share ExcellentThought with others. Any of those will help give more people a chance to learn how we can better tackle the leviathan state—at the federal, state, and local levels—we are up against.
Finally, I know we are all very busy. But for those of you who’d like to dig a bit deeper into the world of applying faith to civil government, I’ve put together a page of Foundational Readings to help you learn more about this. You might also read Bowyer’s and/or Sunshine’s books; two of the best books on civil government from a biblical and historical perspective I’ve ever read. Both are very accessible.
Thank you for reading, considering a paid subscription, and getting the word out about ExcellentThought.
